Botox Cosmetic

Most of us would like to look younger, but we do not have the time or the inclination to have cosmetic surgery. In recent years however, a procedure that offers dramatic changes without surgery or long recovery periods, has gained popularity.

Botulinum toxin A injections, or BOTOX® therapy, as it is more commonly known, was the top cosmetic procedure performed in 2001. Considering how safe and effective it is in treating facial wrinkles such as frown lines and crow's feet, it is no wonder that men and women are increasingly choosing BOTOX® to combat the signs of aging.

BOTOX® is by no means a new treatment. It has been used worldwide since 1980 to treat misalignment of the eyes and eyelid spasms. But while it has long been approved for the treatment of certain medical conditions, in the U.S., it has only recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic purposes.

BOTOX® is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the culprit behind botulism food poisoning. However, because you receive only the smallest of doses in specifically targeted muscles, BOTOX® treatment is not harmful.

If you are tired of the way wrinkles make you feel and look, it may be time to consider BOTOX® treatment. At our center, we will personally assess your cosmetic needs and determine the right course of treatment for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is BOTOX®?

A BOTOX® treatment is natural, purified protein, which in very low doses relaxes the overactive muscles that cause frown lines to form. Treatment is simple and nonsurgical and smoothes the deep, persistent lines between your brows that developed over time.

Is it safe?

BOTOX® which has been safely used to treat a variety of conditions for more than 10 years, is now FDA-approved as BOTOX® for the temporary treatment of frown lines in people aged 18 to 65.

How does it work?
BOTOX® works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles, allowing the wrinkles to relax away and leaving facial expression free of lines or at least significantly reduced.

How long does it last?

BOTOX® will continue to prevent and reduce facial lines and wrinkles for three to four months but sometimes up to six months or longer. Following treatment, the results are not immediately apparent. It usually takes two days to begin to relax lines-reaching its full action by one week.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects are restricted to minor and temporary redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site. Very rarely laziness of an eyelid or mild double vision is reported. These effects are temporary, lasting one to two weeks, and will occur if the injections are inappropriately placed. Recovery is spontaneously.

Which lines can I treat with BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is commonly used to treat the crow's feet around the eyes, the central frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and the worry lines across the forehead. BOTOX® represents the treatment of choice (best treatment) for these lines. The marionette lines, or sad lines, from the corner of the mouth to the chin can also be very effectively treated with BOTOX®.

Is it true that BOTOX® can be used to stop headaches and excess sweating?

Yes. In many patients BOTOX® has proven very effective in preventing both migraine and stress headaches. It also reduces armpit sweating by well over 90 percent for an average of eight to 10 months.

What should I do to prepare for a BOTOX® Injection?

Avoid the use of aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or blood-thinning agents, unless they are medically required, for two weeks prior to treatment to minimize bruising. For women, avoid treatment premenstrually as the skin is more sensitive and tender at this time.

Can I have BOTOX® when I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

As with all non-essential medications, it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Is it true that BOTOX® can be used to prevent the occurrence of new lines and wrinkles?

Yes. Because BOTOX® relaxes the wrinkle-causing muscles, it prevents the recurrent skin creasing produced by these muscles, and therefore can prevent the occurrence of new lines and wrinkles. It is a good preventative treatment.

I have heard that BOTOX® will produce a bland, expressionless face. Is this true?

No. Three important terms in BOTOX® therapy are 'character', 'natural' and 'youthful'. Character makes the face interesting, gives insight into the personality and is often very attractive. By artful placement of BOTOX®, attractive character can be maintained. A natural appearance is achieved by preserving normal express while relaxing unwanted lines.

A youthful appearance is created by softening those features that reflect the aging process, such as the extension of crow's feet, forehead furrows and sagging brows. With careful placement, a talented and experienced BOTOX® injector can achieve a youthful appearance on a patient, while maintaining their natural express and character.
